THE LABELS PROJECT
THE POWER OF LABELS: THE MEANING AND USE OF NAMES FOR IDENTITIES AND CONDITIONS
The research project focuses on the language and labels that are, and have previously been, used for minority groups - officially and unofficially.
Danish outdated examples include kejthåndet, fremmedarbejder, homofil, and DAMP-barn, which have now been replaced by other labels.
Throughout time, identities and conditions have changed both names and connotations. This project gets to the core of the nature of naming minority groups and looks for developments and patterns in how labels, and language in general, have been used and perceived over the past decades as well as answer questions such as: How are labels related to stigmatization? And what are the societal and social causes and effects of the ways in which minority identities and conditions are named and talked about?
The project is carried out at the University of Copenhagen and is supported by the Carlsberg Foundation.
